This story is about a dog named Phoenix who was a victim of dogfighting every day. He was so weak that he was eventually dumped near Mecicali. Phoenix was skinny, scared, and covered in horrific wounds. His head had been bitten so many times that he was not able to open his eyes.
Fortunately, Virginia found him wandering the streets and immediately took him to the vet. The vet diagnosed Phoenix with Ehrlichia, which is common among bait dogs. Phoenix needed extensive treatment as his liver was damaged, he was anemic, and extremely underweight. He required a lot of love and care to recover.
Despite all he had been through, Phoenix was still loving and friendly. Virginia stayed with him through his recovery and took him home once he was finally healed.
