Tesla (TSLA) is experiencing a surge in vandalism and targeted attacks against its stores, vehicles, and charging stations. Maye Musk, mother of CEO Elon Musk, took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her frustration over the ongoing incidents:
“People who are damaging Tesla cars, stores and charging stations, are either paid for their criminal acts, or believe the liberal media lies … I’m beyond furious!!!!”
Her reaction highlights a growing wave of hostility against Tesla, coinciding with increased political polarization surrounding Elon Musk and his ventures. The comments come in reply to a post talking about the checkered past of many traditional auto manufacturers like Ford (F), BMW (BMWKY), and Volkswagen (VWAGY).
A Wave of Tesla Attacks Across the U.S.
Tesla dealerships, service centers, and Supercharger stations have become targets of vandalism, arson, and even gunfire. Several high-profile incidents have been reported in recent weeks:
- Loveland, Colorado: A Tesla dealership experienced a fire after an incendiary device was thrown between two vehicles. This was the fifth attack on the same location in just over a month, with previous incidents involving Molotov cocktails and graffiti. Authorities believe the attacks are politically motivated.
- Tigard, Oregon: A Tesla showroom was shot at multiple times, with bullets piercing windows and damaging several vehicles. No injuries were reported, but police described the act as an “orchestrated attack” rather than random vandalism. Notably, while the bullets pierced the windows of the dealership, they were stopped by a bulletproof Cybertruck door.
- New York City: Six protesters were arrested outside a Tesla showroom in Manhattan. Demonstrators, chanting slogans against Elon Musk’s political ties, smashed windows and graffitied the property. Police intervened after clashes with Tesla security.
- San Francisco, California: A Supercharger station in the Bay Area was sabotaged, with cables cut and screens smashed. The incident followed an anonymous online call to action encouraging activists to disrupt Tesla’s infrastructure.
Political Controversy and Growing Backlash Against Tesla
Many experts believe the attacks against Tesla are politically motivated. Elon Musk’s increasing influence in politics — most notably his advisory role in President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) — has drawn fierce criticism.
The backlash against Musk has led to organized boycotts, protests, and a growing online movement encouraging people to divest from Tesla. The movement, dubbed “Tesla Takedown,” has gained traction among activists who argue that Musk’s policies prioritize corporate interests over workers’ rights and environmental concerns.
Tesla’s labor practices have also fueled tensions. The company has repeatedly clashed with unions, particularly in Germany and California, where Tesla workers have protested against long hours, poor working conditions, and alleged retaliatory firings.
How Tesla’s Stock and Business Are Affected
The growing unrest surrounding Tesla has coincided with a volatile period for its stock. Over the past month, shares have seen dramatic swings, with the stock down 35% in the past month alone.
Despite these challenges, Tesla remains a dominant force in the electric vehicle industry, and the company’s long-term vision for self-driving technology, AI, and robotics continues to attract investors. Further, Tesla is the leading choice for consumers looking to make the switch to electric vehicles, so many purchase the car even if they disagree with Musk’s politics.
However, ongoing negative headlines — ranging from safety concerns over Full Self-Driving (FSD) software to federal investigations into Tesla’s pricing strategies — pose potential risks to the company’s future.
Law Enforcement’s Response
Local and federal authorities, including the FBI and ATF, have launched investigations into the series of Tesla-related crimes. Police in multiple states are reviewing security footage and tracking online groups that may be instigating the attacks.
While Tesla has increased private security at its stores and Supercharger stations, company insiders admit that preventing vandalism on a large scale is a difficult challenge.
What’s Next for Tesla and Elon Musk?
Tesla is at a pivotal moment. The company continues to lead in EV technology and AI, but its reputation is being tested by political conflicts, labor disputes, and reports of vandalism that jeopardize investor and consumer sentiment.
Maye Musk’s X post reflects the frustration within the Musk family and Tesla’s loyal base. But whether this controversy ultimately harms or strengthens Tesla’s position in the long run remains to be seen.
