Rory McIlroy at receiving end of obvious jokes after demonstrating new golf drill

Golf fans were cracking jokes about Rory McIlroy’s new drill ahead of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour.

Golf fans were joking Rory McIlroy might be half-decent with proper length clubs after he demonstrated the latest drill he is implementing to try and improve his swing.

McIlroy, 35, is in the Middle East this week making his first start of the 2025 campaign.

He will attempt to become a five-time champion of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

The Ulsterman hit the range early on Monday at Emirates Golf Club and was spotted using a smaller iron.

One X user joked: “Rory finally went for a fitting?!”

Another added: “How tall has he grown in the offseason if those are his clubs?”

This person joked: “Give this man some correct length clubs. His swing looks good.”

Others pointed out that McIlroy appears to have hit the gym since his last appearance at the DP World Tour’s season finale.

“Man looks thick,” one said. “Bro is on steroids,” added xiu8787.

McIlroy revealed last November that he locked himself in isolation for three weeks to try and make some much-needed changes.

He told reporters he hadn’t liked his swing for a while and wanted a more robust one to stand up to pressure-filled moments.

“The only way I was going to make a change, or at least move in the right direction, with my swing was to lock myself in a studio and not see the ball flight for a bit and just focus entirely on the movement,” McIlroy said.

When McIlroy emerged from his isolation period he claimed his sixth Race to Dubai title in November.

He held off Denmark’s Rasmus Hojgaard to win the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

In the immediate aftermath of that win, McIlroy broke down in tears after he matched Seve Ballesteros’ record.

“Everyone knows what Seve means to European golf and Ryder Cup players,” an emotional McIlroy told Sky Sports.

“The European Ryder Cup locker room, all we have are quotes from Seve. We had a changing room with Seve’s shirt from ’95, the last Ryder Cup he played.

“He means so much to European golf and for me to be mentioned in the same breath, I’m very proud.”
