Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million Dodgers contract and the World Series-winning promise

Shohei Ohtani, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ $700 million superstar, isn’t just redefining baseball; he’s rewriting the rules of contracts and team-building. In an exclusive interview, Ohtani revealed the unique structure of his record-breaking deal—deferring a staggering $680 million of his salary—and the promise he made with the Dodgers organization that led to a World Series championship in just his first season.

“Mark [Walter], Andrew [Friedman], the owners, we all made a promise to create the best team possible,” Ohtani said. “Winning the World Series showed we kept our promise to each other.”

A Groundbreaking Contract

Ohtani’s unprecedented contract, which pays him just $2 million annually while deferring the majority of his earnings, stunned the baseball world. Fans of rival teams balked, but the structure wasn’t a Dodgers ploy—it was Ohtani’s idea, offered to every team vying for his signature.

By deferring his salary, Ohtani allowed the Dodgers to pursue top-tier talent, securing players like Blake Snell, a two-time Cy Young winner, on a $182 million deal. The team is also investing $100 million in Dodger Stadium renovations, signaling their commitment to long-term success.

Unselfishness Redefined

Nez Balelo, Ohtani’s agent, praised the star’s vision and generosity. “Shohei didn’t want to hamstring the organization,” Balelo said. “He wanted the Dodgers to remain competitive year after year and build a championship-caliber team.”

The move paid off. Ohtani’s first year saw the Dodgers claim the 2024 World Series, defeating the Yankees in a thrilling five-game series. But for Ohtani and the Dodgers, one championship isn’t enough—their goal is to build a dynasty.

A Legacy in the Making

Dodgers CEO Stan Kasten dismissed criticism of the contract structure, emphasizing its historical precedent. “We’ve done deferrals since the ’70s. The only thing unique here is the amount,” Kasten said.

Ohtani’s vision has already 𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧e fruit, but with major renovations, bold acquisitions, and a team built to win, the Dodgers are poised for sustained dominance. As Ohtani said, “It’s refreshing and rewarding to know we all did our part.”

The baseball world may never see another deal—or player—like Shohei Ohtani.
