14-year-old girl beats 10000 contestants to emerge winner of UBA essay competition, wins ₦7.5million scholarship to university

14-year-old Tehilah Isimah, a student of Everest Heights International Academy, Abuja, Nigeria, has emerged as the winner of the 2024 United Bank for Africa (UBA) National Essay Competition (NEC).

Her exceptional performance triumphed over 10,000 entries, earning her a ₦7.5 million scholarship to pursue her university education at any African institution of her choice.

UBA National Essay Competition aims to promote the reading culture and encourage healthy and intellectual competition amongst secondary school students in Nigeria and across Africa.

At the grand finale, held at UBA House in Lagos, Nigeria, Tehilah was awarded the prestigious educational grant, along with a laptop, a trophy, a plaque, and a certificate.

The second-place winner, Obinna-Chukwu Christabel from Regina Pacis College, Abuja, received ₦5 million in educational grants, while the third-place winner, Essien Emediong of the Nigerian Christian Institute, Uyo, Akwa Ibom, received ₦3.5 million.

While receiving her award, an elated Tehilah expressed her gratitude and excitement. “I am so happy, I prayed and worked so hard for this, even though I am a science student, I have always loved writing,” Tehila said.

The 2024 NEC marked a significant milestone with over 10,000 submissions. The top 20 finalists from regional tests were also rewarded with brand-new laptops and other educational materials to support their academic pursuits.

Tehila’s mother, who was present at the event, shared her pride and joy. “I can’t believe this, this is happening, thank you UBA Foundation, this is indeed a dream come through for us, I am so happy,” she said.

The Managing Director/CEO of UBA Foundation, Bola Atta, commended the participants and highlighted the growing interest in the competition, especially from northern Nigeria.

“We are thrilled to see young minds rise to the challenge of addressing key issues facing our society. This year’s entries were not only numerous but also of exceptional quality, reflecting the brilliance and creativity of Africa’s next generation,” Atta said.

Oliver Alawuba, UBA’s Group Managing Director/CEO, emphasized the bank’s commitment to promoting education across Africa.   “At the UBA Foundation, education has always been our cornerstone. We believe that knowledge is the most powerful catalyst for transformative change,” Mr Alawuba said.

The UBA National Essay Competition continues to inspire young African students to harness their creativity and intellect, fostering a brighter future for the continent through education.
