More Superman Legacy Casting News Teased By James Gunn

James Gunn confirms he has cast more Superman: Legacy actors and confirms that more DCU casting news will come sooner rather than later.

SUMMARY

  •  James Gunn confirms that more casting news for Superman: Legacy will be announced after the actors’ strike ends, building anticipation for the movie.
  •  Major characters like Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, and Clark Kent’s parents are likely to be announced soon, as they play important roles in Superman’s DC lore.
  •  Superman: Legacy‘s main villain remains a mystery, with possibilities ranging from Lex Luthor to previously overlooked villains like Metallo, Parasite, or Brainiac.

DCU head James Gunn reveals that more Superman: Legacy casting news will come soon after the actors’ strike officially ends. Anticipation for James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy soared in June 2023 with the announcement of David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan’s casting as Superman and Lois Lane, which was followed by the announcement of four more members of the DCU’s Superman: Legacy cast: Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner. However, casting news stopped due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, which have taken place over the span of three months.

Since negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers seem to be moving forward smoothly, directors are gearing up to announce their casts. Responding to a fan on Threads (via ComicBook), James Gunn confirmed that Superman: Legacy has found more cast members, and that he will reveal them once the actors’ strike concludes. See the interaction below:

Who Is Left To Cast In Superman: Legacy?

Although Superman: Legacy‘s plot details are rather scarce, there are still a few major characters whose actors are likely to be announced soon. Superman’s best friend Jimmy Olsen and Daily Planet boss Perry White may be especially important in Superman: Legacy due to the movie’s focus on Clark Kent; and even though Superman: Legacy is skipping Superman’s early years, Clark Kent’s parents are also likely to appear in the movie. In the DCEU, Lawrence Fishburne played Perry White, Kevin Costner played Jonathan Kent, Diane Lane played Martha Kent, and a very vague adaptation of Jimmy Olsen briefly appeared in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, portrayed by Michael Cassidy.

The biggest Superman: Legacy casting that remains a mystery is the movie’s main villain. Previous Superman movies have featured General Zod, Lex Luthor, Doomsday, and Darkseid, which means that these villains are unlikely to be the main threat in Superman’s first DCU movie. It’s possible that Superman: Legacy will introduce the DCU’s Lex Luthor, but focus on another enemy throughout the story. DC Comics villains such as Metallo, Parasite, and Brainiac can offer famous or relatively unknown actors plenty of opportunities to leave a mark on Superman’s movie history with a main villain role in Superman: Legacy.

Other Superman: Legacy casting decisions that could be announced include Superman’s Kryptonian parents Jor-El and Lara Lor-van, as well as Clark Kent’s 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥hood friends and Smallville residents Lana Lang and Pete Ross. Considering Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is part of the DCU’s “Gods and Monsters” chapter, Supergirl might also appear in Superman: Legacy, confirming whether the DCU is keeping Sasha Calle in the role or not. Beyond the DC characters who usually appear in Superman stories, James Gunn can shock audiences with the surprise appearance of any new or already confirmed DCU character in Superman: Legacy.
