Young African-American lady emerges US university’s best-graduating student, set to earn PhD

A young African-American lady named Kendra Grissom has emerged as the best-graduating student of Spelman College, United States.

Kendra Grissom, a Baltimore native bagged her bachelor’s degree in History at Spelman College, a historically black college for women in the  United States. She graduated with a Summa Cum Laude grade.

Kendra said being awarded the best graduating student of her school is a very significant achievement considering her background as the first ever university graduate in her family.

She said because of her color, people discounted her and made assumptions about her abilities because of her origin. “I am incredibly proud of my Baltimore roots and I hope this moment serves as evidence that inner city youth should not be underestimated,” Kendra said.

“As a first-generation college student, I am incredibly blessed to have a village of amazing mentors, teachers, family members, friends, neighbors, professors, and church members who have supported me throughout my life’s journey. I would not be where I am today without them, and this honor is as much theirs as it is mine,” she added.

While a student at Spelman College, Kendra focused on both academic excellence and service. She is a member of the Phi Alpha Theta and Phi Beta Kappa Honor Societies.

She also received multiple awards and honors, including the Clio Outstanding History Graduating Senior Award. Kendra worked to support her fellow classmates as a mentor in the Ford First Generation Scholars Program while maintaining the academic excellence required of her.
