Fans praise Andre Onana for ‘showing more balls than most of the squad’ as he ‘DEMANDS interview’ to apologise for gaffe

ANDRE ONANA offered a grovelling apology to his Manchester United team-mates after his error against Bayern Munich.

The £47million buy from Inter Milan had come in for criticism earlier this week due to United conceding ten goals in five Premier League games.

And Onana was thrust into the spotlight tonight when he failed to make a routine save against Leroy Sane to kick off the 4-3 defeat at the Allianz Arena.

The former Manchester City star produced a tame shot from outside the box, but Onana failed to deal with it properly and the ball spooned off his hand and into the net.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Onana admitted it was “my worst game”, but praised his team-mates for their efforts in almost clawing a result from the game through three second half goals.

Onana said: “It’s difficult to lose this way because, in the beginning, we started very good.

“After my mistake, we lost control of the game.

“It’s a difficult situation for us, for me especially because I’m the one who let the team down. We didn’t win today because of me.”

Asked whether he felt he had to prove himself to United fans Onana replied: “Of course, I have a lot to prove because to be honest my start has not been good.

“Today was one of my worst games and it’s difficult because we have big ambition and it was a big opportunity for us to bounce back.

“It’s tough but we have to be together and to learn from our mistakes is the only thing to do.”

Despite the error, fans praised Onana for owning up to his mistake and coming out to face the post-match scrutiny after requesting to speak to the media.

One fan said: “Fair play to Onana for that interview.

A second typed: “Onana showing more balls and character than most of this squad.”

“Onana requested an interview. De Gea would be on the way home already 😂😂,” remarked a third.

A fourth wrote: “He has owned to his mistakes wow.”

Another added: “Owning up to it nice to see.

While a fifth commented: “What a guy.”

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag blasted his team’s defensive display, saying the lack of consistency in the team’s performances were bringing the overall results of the team down.

The Dutchman told TNT Sports: “I’m disappointed. If you score three goals at Bayern you have to take at least a point.

“We are in a period where a lot is going against us. But we have to make our own luck.

“When we don’t stick to our rules and principles we concede goals, though we have played great teams in the last three games.”

On Onana’s start to his Man Utd career, he added: “It’s good he’s doing that [giving an interview], but it’s about the team.

“Mistakes are being made but you need to bounce back as a team.

“We have to believe we can always bounce back…

“Before the goal it was too easy for the player to get the shot so you have to be consistent in staying in the game.

“It’s in our hands, me and the whole team.”

Onana was disconsolate and stayed slumped on the floor after his clanger
