Manchester United ‘take aim’ at £17million Porto star to fill Erik ten Hag priority and more transfer rumours

Man United will turn their focus on a new striker once the signing of Mason Mount is confirmed and Erik ten Hag is reportedly eyeing cheaper alternatives

Manchester United have FC Porto striker Mehdi Taremi on their ‘agenda’ as Erik ten Hag eyes cheaper alternatives to fill his No.9 void, according to reports in Portugal.

The United boss will refocus efforts on a world-class goalscorer once the signing of Mason Mount is confirmed, following the agreement of a £60million fee with Chelsea earlier this week. The 24-year-old is set for a medical once he returns from holiday.

Once that deal is over the line, Ten Hag will get back to work on adding goals upfront. The Dutchman has long earmarked Harry Kane as his priority target, but is also interested in the likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Randal Kolo Muani. Financial Fair Play concerns could limit United’s spending slightly, and Jornal de Noticias have reported that Taremi could offer a cheaper alternative.

The 30-year-old, who scored twice for Iran against England at last year’s World Cup in Qatar, enjoyed a blistering 2022/23 campaign in Portugal, registering 31 goals and 14 assists in all competitions. Porto are open to selling their striker, but will not listen to any offers below €20million (around £17million).

Elsewhere, Dutch media outlet 1908 report that United are ‘keeping tabs’ on Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow.

The Reds are in the midst of a goalkeeping crisis, with David De Gea now a free agent after failing to agree a new contract. Dean Henderson is convinced he will join Nottingham Forest permanently but has seen any deal put on hold, being one of only two senior goalkeepers on the club’s books.

A number of goalkeepers have been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks, and Ten Hag could return to a proven tactic of recruiting from the league he is so familiar with.

Bijlow kept 15 clean sheets in 34 appearances in all competitions last season, helping Feyenoord win the Eredivisie title. The 25-year-old is a fully-fledged Netherlands international, having played eight times for the Oranje.
