The actress and the Jonas Brothers singer tied the knot in December 2018
Priyanka Chopra is opening up about her journey to love.
Speaking in a new cover interview for Harper’s Bazaar UK’s March issue, the actress spoke about marrying her husband Nick Jonas, with whom she shares 3-year-old daughter Malti.
“I wouldn’t have married [Nick] if he didn’t tick all the right boxes,” said Chopra, 42. “You have to look for someone who respects you. Respect is different from love and affection … You’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs until you find your prince.”
Chopra’s comments come after she revealed in 2023 that “kept making the same mistakes” in dating before meeting Jonas, 32, whom she married in 2018.
As she explained on the Armchair Expert podcast, “A lot of the pattern in my relationships was me feeling gaslit because I gave that kind of power to the people that I was with, where I was like, ‘You come first,’ ” adding
Chopra and Jonas first interacted in 2016 when the “Jealous” artist reached out to her on X, suggesting they go on a date.
“I’m hearing from a few mutual friends that we should meet,” he wrote.
During her appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast, Chopra revealed she was near the end of a “tumultuous relationship” when the Jonas Brothers singer messaged her, adding she “didn’t want to engage as much at the time.”
“I was also like 35, Nick was 25. I really put a stop to it in a way because I judged the book by the cover. I said, ‘I wanna settle down. I have been there and done the fun dating things,’ ” she said. “I was like, ready to get serious.”
However, the pair kept in touch through “random texts” and met in person for the first time in 2017 at the Vanity Fair Oscars party.
Jonas told Vogue for a joint interview published in December 2018 that he got down on one knee at the same event during the couple’s first meeting.
“This is in front of a bunch of people,” he recalled at the time. “I say, ‘You’re real. Where have you been all my life?’ Like, loud.”
The duo were then spotted out together on multiple occasions, with confirming on July 27, 2018, that they were engaged.
The real proposal took place in Crete while celebrating Chopra’s 36th 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡day. The pair then confirmed their engagement on Aug. 19 of that year by sharing the same photo taken in Chopra’s home country of India on Instagram. “Future Mrs. Jonas. My heart. My love,” Jonas captioned the shot.
Jonas and Chopra later tied the knot in India, on Dec. 1, 2018. They went on to welcome their first 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥 together, daughter Malti, via surrogate on Jan. 15, 2022.
The March 2025 issue of Harper’s Bazaar is on sale beginning Thursday, Feb. 6.
