Jay Monahan’s Worries to Worsen as Rory McIlroy Announces Major Schedule Changes

Jay Monahan’s PGA Tour hasn’t really had a great start to the 2025 season. The Kapalua Plantation Course was ridiculed for being a little too easy for a signature event like The Sentry. Major stars like Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler had withdrawn from the event. The world no. 1 was cited to have picked up an injury along the way. Additionally, the lack of star players led to a major drop in the viewership for the event this year.

And now, McIlroy has added one more thing Monahan & Co. needs to worry about. The Irish golfer revealed his schedule for the 2025 season. McIlroy had already hinted at cutting down on his schedule for 2025. This was due to the hectic and stressful 2024 he had experienced. The 35-year-old has confirmed which league will he be skipping the events from in 2025.

In a press conference prior to the 2025 Hero Dubai Desert Classic, Rory McIlroy gave everyone a glimpse of his schedule. He said, “I’ll probably play, including the Ryder Cup, something like 22,” which is a lot less than the 27 events he played in 2024. Speaking about his commitments to the European circuit, he said, “My DP World Tour schedule will be pretty similar to what it was last year.” This suggests that McIlroy is not going to cut down on DP World Tour events.

During this reveal, he shared something that would cause distress to Jay Monahan. McIlroy said, “I’ll play a similar schedule here (in the DP World Tour), and just shave off some events over in the States.” This suggests that he will play fewer PGA Tour events in 2025. This is deeply concerning for Jay Monahan & co. who welcomed Rory McIlroy to 19 PGA Tour events in 2024.

Now we know where Rory McIlroy will be making the cut. Let’s see which events he can possibly skip in 2025.

Possible PGA Tour schedule of the world no. 3 golfer

Rory McIlroy has not provided his detailed schedule yet. But we can take a look at his appearances in 2024 to understand which events he might be skipping. The field for the American Express 2025 has already been released. We can confirm that Rory McIlroy is skipping the event this year just like he did in 2024 as well. Rory McIlroy will be stepping foot at the Pebble Beach Golf Links for the 2025 AT&T Pebble Beach Tournament. He was a part of the field in 2024 and has committed to it this time around as well.

McIlroy will surely make it to the Genesis Invitational, an event that is hosted by his close friend and TGL co-owner; Tiger Woods. He might also be part of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players Championship, and the RBC Heritage. They are considered important events in the PGA Tour calendar along with The Memorial Tournament, which will be held in May 2025. Top this off with 4 annual majors and we have already deciphered 10 events that Rory McIlroy might feature in. We can also see him joining the field at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the Wells Fargo Championship to defend the titles he won in 2024.
