Baseball World Gets a Startling Update: Ohtani Is Judged Unfit to Start the Season

Shohei Ohtani, the electrifying two-way player, faces a daunting challenge as the 2025 baseball season beckons. Following shoulder surgery, the star athlete may not be fit to pitch when the Dodgers kick off the season in Japan. Despite this setback, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts remains hopeful that Ohtani will still make an impact as the designated hitter. The uncertainty surrounding Ohtani’s pitching abilities casts a shadow of doubt over his immediate future on the mound.

“Very unlikely,’’ Roberts admitted when pressed about the possibility of Ohtani pitching in Tokyo. “I just don’t see us starting the clock in March to then think that we would keep that continuously going through October. Then, that would call for a break or reprieve in the middle of the season, so I don’t know. I still think unlikely.’’ The manager’s reservations hint at the complexity of Ohtani’s recovery and the intricate balancing act the team faces in managing his return to full form.

Navigating a Two-Way Challenge

The Dodgers’ reliance on Ohtani’s dual pitching and hitting prowess adds a layer of complexity to their strategic planning. Roberts emphasized the necessity of caution in Ohtani’s rehabilitation process, highlighting the need to balance strength training for the left shoulder with pitching preparations and hitting practice. The delicate juggling act required to bring Ohtani back to full strength underscores the team’s commitment to his long-term well-being.

Roberts mused on the unique nature of Ohtani’s situation, stating, “I guess if anyone can manage it, it’s Shohei. But it’s certainly going to look a lot different. I don’t think the left shoulder is going to have much of an impact on Shohei’s pitching, I think his innings, his right elbow, is the biggest factor. I just think the question is when he starts pitching in Major League games.’’ The manager’s reflections hint at the uncertainties that shroud Ohtani’s return to pitching and the pivotal role his right elbow health will play in determining his readiness for the mound.

The Weight of Expectations

As Ohtani prepares to navigate the challenges of a two-way comeback, the weight of expectations from fans and the organization looms large. Roberts acknowledged the pressure on Ohtani, noting, “I don’t think he’d have it any other way. That’s our expectation… If something doesn’t look right, feel right, obviously we’ve got to pivot.” The unrelenting spotlight on Ohtani’s recovery underscores the high stakes involved and the need for a cautious and strategic approach to his reintroduction to pitching.

With the specter of uncertainty hanging over Ohtani’s pitching return, the Dodgers face a critical juncture in managing their star player’s rehabilitation. The intricate dance between pitching, hitting, and overall physical maintenance will determine Ohtani’s trajectory in the upcoming season and beyond. As the baseball world holds its breath, the unfolding saga of Ohtani’s comeback stands as a testament to resilience, determination, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
