After the conclusion of the EURO 2024 group stage, UEFA made adjustments to the refereeing team. Accordingly, Spanish referee Jesus Gil Manzano was dismissed for the remainder of the tournament. The reason is that this 40-year-old king of the field made a mistake in the match between France and Austria 1-0 in the first round of the group stage.

Mbappe received a yellow card for unprecedented actions

Mr. Gil Manzano’s way of running the match made both France and Austria unhappy. One of Gil Manzano’s biggest mistakes occurred in the 35th minute, he gave France a goal kick but Austria should have had a corner kick.

Just 3 minutes after Gil Manzano’s wrong decision, Austria conceded a goal thanks to Max Wober’s own goal.

After this defeat, Austria had more reason to criticize Gil Manzano because they thought that if they had been awarded a corner kick, France would not have been able to open the score immediately after.

On the opposite side, France was frustrated because Gil Manzano was too gentle and did not know how to warn the Austrian players when they repeatedly committed harsh fouls.

According to statistics, the match between France and Austria had 24 fouls, the most in the group stage. Mr. Gil Manzano gave out 7 yellow cards but no red cards, 5 for Austria and 2 for France. Of the two French cards, one is for Kylian Mbappe . This card also caused a backlash from coach Didier Deschamps and the French player.

Sad for Gil Manzano because that was also the only match he was assigned to officiate at EURO 2024 . In addition to Gil Manzano, two of his assistants in that match, including Diego Barbero Sevilla and Angel Nevado Rodriguez, were also relieved of their duties by UEFA. Furthermore, VAR referee Alejandro Hernandez Hernandez was also sent home early.

All four referees “early expelled” from EURO 2024 by UEFA are Spanish. In this tournament, UEFA only invited 5 referees from the country of gaur and currently only Mr. Juan Martinez Munuera remains.
