Girl, 10, given Taylor Swift’s hat during Eras Tour gig in Edinburgh reveals she initially thought the star was telling her to get down off her seat

A 10-year-old girl who was given Taylor Swift‘s hat during the Eras Tour gig in Edinburgh has revealed she initially thought the star was telling her to get down off her seat as she was standing on it.

Pippa Bartholomew’s dream came true on Saturday night when she was chosen by Taylor Swift as the lucky recipient of her fedora hat during the hit song 22.

The ten year old and her mum only secured tickets for the concert at Murrayfield Stadium at 2pm that day after initially missing out in the first round of sales.

Pippa said in an interview with the BBC: ‘I said to my mum is this a dream, is this real. I was first in complete disbelief.

‘I thought she [Taylor] was telling me to get down off my seat as I was standing on my chair but she actually saying can you come with me.’

Describing the moment she received the hat, Pippa added: ‘I said oh my goodness, thank you so much and she [Taylor] said you’re welcome.

‘She then said do you want a hug and I said absolutely.’

The American megastar, 34, wears the black fedora, from designer Gladys Tamez, each time she performs her hit song 22 on the Eras Tour.

It’s a nod to the music video which sees her sport the hat for most of the clip, as well as the memorable black and white shirt with the text: ‘Not a lot going on at the moment.’

The tradition of giving the hat away originated during the US leg of her tour at a show in Glenfield, Arizona.

Some reports suggest that the fan is chosen at random by Taylor’s team – sometimes even by her mother Andrea.

But others indicate Taylor chooses people she knows personally ahead of time.

Taylor kicked off the UK leg of her sellout Eras Tour in Edinburgh on Friday evening – stepping out in a trademark blue and gold sequin bodysuit to tell screaming fans: ‘What a way to welcome a lass to Scotland.’

The sell-out show saw her run through a cavalcade of hits including Cruel Summer, Lover, You Belong With Me, Love Story and 22.

Taylor also performed at Murrayfield on Saturday and Sunday night before she heads to Liverpool, Cardiff and Wembley.

Swifties camped outside of Murrayfield stadium to secure the best spot in the venue and broke stadium attendance records – with around 73,000 attending each show.

Perhaps the most special moment of the first night came when the pop icon witnessed a live proposal in the audience.

Footage posted online shows the two women hugging and kissing each other with beaming smiles after the proposal while Swift performs her song ‘Cardigan’.

After finishing the song, Swift says to the audience: ‘I love performing this entire show in the sunlight, because I’m pretty sure I just, like, saw somebody getting engaged over here,’ as the crowd cheered.

She then asked the couple, ‘Did it happen?’ and said, ‘Yes!’ as she balled her fists in the air in excitement after it was apparently confirmed that the proposal had indeed taken place.

‘You have no idea, I never get to see that, right? Because it’s, like, dark usually at night,’ she explained to the crowd.

‘But it’s not right now so congratulations. Wow, I just saw that whole thing! Uh, man, that’s amazing. Thanks for doing that at my concert, that’s a big moment — huge!’

The music from Swift’s first night reached much further than Murrayfield Stadium.

Someone posted a video online and the sound of ‘who’s afraid of little old me’ being sang by thousands of Swifties can be heard in the background.

It was captioned with, ‘Who’s afraid of little old me from literally miles away… I’m speechless. Taylor is taking over Edinburgh’.

Other people could also hear the roaring fans, with one commenting, ‘I’m about 2 kilometres away from the stadium, I can hear it all perfectly. The crowd is INSANE.’
