Cardi B addresses Met Gala backlash after referring to designer as ‘Asian’ instead of their name

Cardi B is speaking out after fans gave her an F for her performance in a Met Gala red carpet interview.

The “WAP” rapper, 31, addressed the backlash she received over an awkward moment on the red carpet of Monday’s Met Gala where she referred to the designer of her dress as “Asian” instead of by their name.

In a video from social media shared by TMZ, Cardi B said she “had a lot of things on my mind” on the red carpet and was “being rushed to the front of the line,” so she “kind of forgot to pronounce” the designer’s name.

Cardi B attends the Met Gala on May 6, 2024.

“His name is a little bit complicated, so I was like, ‘Damn, how to pronounce his name?'” she said. “My mind was just racing.”

Her dress was designed by Sensen Lii, but the name seemed to elude her when she spoke to Vogue at the event. “It’s this amazing designer,” Cardi B told Emma Chamberlain when asked who the designer was. “They’re Asian and everything, so yeah.”

Fans took to the comments of the Vogue interview to slam Cardi B for the remark.

“I’m crying at her not knowing the name of the designer,” one comment read, while another user wrote, “Not knowing the name of the designer is lowkey insulting + calling them Asian and everything… no no!”

But in her video response, the rapper accused fans of “fake gagging” over her red carpet gaffe.

“I didn’t say that to be offensive or to get your little speedos in a bunch,” she said.

The rapper also slammed former Vogue managing director Gilbert Cheah, who according to Billboard wrote in an Instagram comment, “I personally think (the dress is) boring and not even on theme but she chose it and should have at least remembered his name and not just that he’s ‘Asian.'”

In response, Cardi B said, “It just proves why you’re the former director, you know what I’m saying?” She also said she called the designer Asian because she “wasn’t sure what nationality” he was.

A photo gallery on Cardi B’s Instagram page gave proper credit to the team behind her Met Gala look, though that post, too, drew negative comments referencing her Vogue interview.

“Cardi you had one job to remember the designer name!!” one fan wrote. “Not some asian person. That was super disappointing.”
